Destination Spotlight: An Epic Perth to Margaret River Road Trip

The drive from Perth to Margaret River is more than just getting from A to B; it's a classic Aussie road trip packed with incredible sights. This journey is all about stunning coastlines, charming towns, and world-class food and wine.

The Journey Begins:

Start your adventure by heading south from Perth. Consider a stop in Mandurah to spot dolphins or take a break in Bunbury before reaching the famous Busselton Jetty. Walking or taking the train to the end of this 1.8km-long jetty is a must-do!

Caves and Capes:

As you get closer to Margaret River, the Dunsborough and Yallingup area offers incredible natural beauty. Explore the stunning Meelup Beach, take a tour of the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, or delve deep into the beautiful Ngilgi Cave.

The Heart of the Region:

Once in Margaret River, you're in the heart of a foodie's paradise. Spend your days exploring the renowned wineries, breweries, and restaurants. For a touch of natural wonder, don't miss the ancient limestone caves like Lake Cave or the majestic Boranup Karri Forest. The drive to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, where two oceans meet, is another unforgettable experience.

Caravanning Know-How: How to Properly Tie Down Your Awning

Now that you've arrived at the perfect spot, let's talk setup. Your caravan awning is one of your most valuable accessories, and protecting it from wind and rain is essential. An unsecured awning can be damaged easily, leading to expensive repairs.

Why It's Important:

A sudden gust of wind or a downpour of rain can wreak havoc on an awning, bending poles and tearing fabric. Taking a few minutes to secure it properly gives you peace of mind.

The Best Method:

The key is to create a strong, stable structure. Use two guy ropes on each of the outer corners of your awning. This creates a solid triangular anchor that provides stability from multiple directions.

Pegs are Key:

Don't just use any old pegs. The type of ground dictates the best peg to use. Use long, screw-in pegs for sandy or soft ground, and heavy-duty metal pegs for hard, gravelly soil. Always angle the pegs away from the guy rope for the strongest hold.

Beat the Flap:

If you find your awning fabric is still flapping in the wind, consider investing in an Anti-Flap Kit and a curved rafter. This keeps the vinyl taut, preventing noisy flapping and helping with water runoff.
